VISITING wheelchair tennis athlete
Stephane Houdet will on Tuesday interact with about 500 primary school
pupils aged below eight of Ukombozi Primary School in a didactic
workshop geared to promote quality socialization among able bodied
children and those with disabilities.
The community based project that
is coordinated by the CCBRT’s advocacy unit at the sprawling Manzese
superb using drama, music and dance with intent to create disability
awareness right from the core is meant to stimulate a long lasting
impact on the lives of children with disabilities.
Local tennis boss Inger Njau
reiterated on the associations desire to promote inclusion of persons
with disabilities to mainstream activities from the grassroots level and
especially now that wheelchair tennis development is already an
integral part of the national tennis agenda.
While the CCBRT is looking to
empower people with disabilities towards social and economic inclusion,
Tanzania Tennis emphasized that working with the community would inspire
children with disabilities to take up the tennis game at equal footing
with the able bodied.
Prior to the Manzese tour, the
French international who arrived earlier today ahead of a one week
motivational tour of Tanzania Tennis courtesy of Tanga Cement Company,
is scheduled to host a press conference before coordinating a training
session among tennis coaches and players at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana
Club.
He is also scheduled to tour
Jangwani Secondary school on his way to Kijitonyama Tennis Club where he
is expected to mingle with wheelchair tennis athletes from across
various schools and clubs. His tour will climax with an interactive
session with patients and doctors at the CCBRT’s Orthopaedic clinic.
Inger noted: “Our partnership
with the CCBRT during Houdet’s tour will make a huge impact as we move
towards integrating tennis development at all levels of the community.
It is good to note that the institution boasts a strong community based
rehabilitation program that would add value to our integration route. As
much as we would like to see everyone take up the tennis sport, we are
committed to see that people with disabilities are well empowered.”
