STANDARD Chartered Bank Tanzania has pledged to support
various environmental conservation activities in a bid to create a better
living environment.
The Bank’s Head of Corporate Affairs Juanita Mramba during
the commemoration of the environment week yesterday that saw the bank plant
various tree species at Kivukoni ward near Gymkhana Club said, adherence to
good environment practices significantly reduces environmental risks and
ecological scarcities.
Mramba said that it is on such a back ground that her bank
has come up with a special environmental scheme that tends to minimize the use
of wood products within the bank’s operations and services.
“Conservation of the environment should not be remembered in
commemoration of the World Environment Day. This should be a daily routine that
corporate companies and individuals should adhere to.
“At standard chartered bank, we have already instituted an
environmentally friendly scheme that seeks to minimize on the use of wood
products. It is my hope that many trees can be saved in a long run if other
companies bring on board such a scheme,” Mramba said.
On his part the bank’s Health, Safety and Security Manager
Justin Kussaga during the event called upon the public and other stake holders
to join forces in a bid to come up with sustainable environmentally friendly
projects.
But the Kivukoni Ward Executive Officer Abdul Msangule cautioned
that companies needed to come up with best practice activities that should go
along with ensuring the sustainability of the trees planted.
“These best practice activities should include continuous
irrigation if the trees are to grow and serve their intended purposes otherwise
we will be counting dead trees within years to come,” he cautioned.
