Thousands of
people being served by Frelimo District Hospital in Iringa have reasons to
smile after a state of the art rain water harvesting facility was commissioned
in the area.
The model
facility costing approximately Tzs 50 Million has been constructed through
funding of EABL Foundation and Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) and will
benefit over 100,000 area residents.
Speaking when she
commissioned the facility, Iringa District Commissioner, Dr. Leticia Wariobaa expressed
her gratitude to SBL for guaranteeing availability of water at the hospital,
saying this was one of the key elements for a sustainable community.
“I am glad that
this facility will provide the community with the much-needed resource and wish
to thank SBL and EABL Foundation for
their efforts”, she acknowledged.
She further
revealed that the project would go a long way in reducing the impact of water
borne diseases which was prevalent in the fast expanding area.
The rainwater
harvesting facility project was launched during the climax of world water day
that was nationally commemorated at Samaora Memorial Stadium in Iringa.
SBL was the
official sponsor of the water week whose climax was graced by the President of
the United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
This year alone
Serengeti Breweries Limited has allocated more 300,000,000 shillings on water;
of which 100,000,000 million for the water week sponsorship of media and
communication, branding material, t-shirts, caps, brochures, booklets,
certificates, posters and fliers.
And the remaining
200,000,000 shillings were set aside for water and sanitation projects in
Iringa , Mwanza, Moshi and Dar es salaam.
Also present
during the commissioning ceremony was SBL’s Corporate Relations Director, Teddy
Mapunda who revealed that the business was committed to working with
communities in providing long term solutions through provision of clean,
sustainable water.
“As a company, SBL
recognizes that water is a basic need and an important catalyst for both
economic and social development of the country. Finding sustainable solutions
to the problems of our people underscores our commitment to the communities in
which we operate”. Temeke and Mawenzi hospitals would certainly be commissioned
soon as constructions are being finalised.
Last year, SBL/EABL
Foundation commissioned water and sanitation project in Mkuranga and was part
of corporate companies and NGO’s that came together to improve water at Amana
hospital in Dar es salaam.
Serengeti
Breweries Limited and EABL foundation invested 384.6 Million on Mkuranga Water
project to benefit more than 250,000 people.
