The Parliament of Tanzania and the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tanzania, have launched the Four year Project for
Parliament of Tanzania called Legislatures Support Project (LSP) 2011 – 2015.
The project aims to support Parliamentarians, their Committees and Secretariats
for the next four years and it worth 7.8 Million US Dollars.
The main objectives of the projects is to Strengthen and enhance the
capacity of MPs and their committees to better exercise their interrelated
functions; law making, executive oversight, national budget approval and
oversight and representation of constituents/citizens. Also the project will strengthen
the Secretariat to help them deliver effective services to parliamentarians and
help build sustainable modern internal parliamentary staff management.
The most important partners in this project are The National
Assembly of Tanzania, the United Nations Development Programme, National and
international civil society organizations, Parliamentary training institutions,
Regional Parliaments and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). Also
it will involve the Office of the Controller and Auditor General, Local
Government Authorities, the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority and
Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau, World Bank and the African
Development Bank.
This is the
most important project to Parlimanet of Tanzania as it will help to enhancing capacity of members to effectively
deal with expertise on legislative and understand substantive issues,
particularly on Oversight and representation function. The main contributors to
the project includes the UNDP, DFID, Embassy of Ireland, Embassy of Norway,
African Development Bank, South African High Commission
