THE fate of students who plotted the recent strike at the University of Dodoma (UDOM) will be known at the end of this month, the university's Vice-Chancellor Prof Idrisa Kikula has said.

Prof Kikula on Monday said that the institution, contrary to rumours that some students have been expelled on the basis of their political affiliations, had barred no one.

"All suspended students will remain suspended until a disciplinary committee convenes to discuss every individual's involvement in the strike and the chaos that ensued," he said.

The UDOM VC also noted that at the moment all finalists have been reinstated because they were not party to the strike.

He said the finalists, nevertheless, were sent home for security reasons and that the process to reinstate others who were not involved in the fracas was well under way.

UDOM was mid last month partially closed after days of unrest as students demanded field allowances.

The move affected some 9,949 undergraduate students from the social sciences and humanities faculties.

"We have advertised on different media the university's intention to institute disciplinary proceedings on all the suspended students and gave them a deadline to explain their involvement in writing from which the committee will work on," he said.

The notice in media gives the students 21 days from July 1, this year, to write a personal letter to the institution to pledge not to get involved in strike, boycott and demonstrations.

"We have already blacklisted some 400 students whom we believe were responsible for this.

"But we want to give them a second chance to exonerate themselves before we take any further action," Prof Kikula said.

UDOM by-laws state that conducts which are likely to cause damage, defacement or violence to person or property within the University is an offence.

The use of slanderous, abusive, obscene or threatening language, planning and participating in unlawful demonstration are all offensive acts and are also prohibited.
