I wish to become a Doctor…Can You walk with me please ?

Dar es Salaam, 26th August 2016 His name is Festus, 12-year old and in class six, coming from Kilombero District in Morogoro, Tanzania. He came to Muhimbili Referral Hospital in Dar es Salaam for treatment and was diagnosed with a hip cancer which necessitated an amputation. On the operation day, he lost his father of stroke as he was preparing to go and be with his son before he goes to the theatre.

“He is healing very well”, a caring nurse Sussane who has been with him since his arrival commented this morning. His mother said that he performs very well in school, first and second position tops since grade one. She fears that the passing of his father and his amputation may impede him for continuing with school.

I asked Festus “what would you like to be when you finish studies?” He answered, “a doctor”. I was surprised of his answer considering a painful journey at a young age he had just gone through. All I could then say to him was “Festus, you will finish your studies, you will become a doctor. You do not have a leg but I know some people out there will walk with you”

I lost my sister 16 years ago this day of cancer, memories of her still very fresh in my mind and heart. I don’t wish to see this young boy lose his dream because of this misfortune. He needs TZS 250,000/- for a wheel chair. Let us be his parent and his leg and see this boy pursue his dream. It is not the end of his life and so should not be the end of his dream. Who knows, maybe as a doctor he could find a cure for Cancer!!
