Uingereza yajitoa EU, PM kujivua gamba October

 

David Cameron has announced that he is stepping down as prime minister.

There should be a new PM in place by the start of the Conservative Party conference in October, he says.

It is not right for him "to be the captain of the ship" as the British people have taken a very clear decision to take a different path to the one he has promoted, he adds.

David Cameron says that while leaving Europe is not the path he would have recommended, "I have said before Britain could survive outside the EU."

Pledging he will do everything he can to help the UK find its way, his voice came close to breaking, as he adds: "I love this country and I feel honoured to have served it."
