Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the West African country’s Vice President from 2001 to 2009, died today November 16, at the Cardio Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Hospital sources confirmed news of his death to local media at about 10: 20am.
Rumours about Mahama’s death made the rounds in local media this week only for his family and hospital officials to debunk them, insisting he was doing fine, and that plans were far advanced for him to be flown abroad for treatment.
However, it appeared he could no longer hold on, as he finally passed away on Friday morning, sending waves of sorrow across a country yet to recover from Atta Mills’ death.
Sources say Mahama was on life support for the past few days, due to heart related complications.
Mahama was born on March 3, 1946. He was a Quantity Surveyor by occupation. He became Ghana’s Vice President under the John Agyekum Kufour/NPP administration from January 7 2001 to January 7 2009.
