ABG appoints Philbert Rweyemamu General Manager of Tulawaka Mine
· Rweyemamu among most experienced Tanzanian mining executives
· He commences duty as GM effectively on 3 September 2012
African
Barrick Gold (ABG) is pleased to announce that it has appointed
Philbert Rweyemamu as General Manager of the Tulawaka Gold Mine.
Mr.
Rweyemamu, who is one of the most experienced Tanzanian mining
executives, has more than 30 years professional mining experience. He
will commence duties on 3 September 2012.
He
previously worked for DeBeers Williamson Mine in various roles, the
most senior being Director of Production, a position he held from 2001
to 2003. He then held the position of Mining Manager Services from 2003
to 2004 at Orapa & Lethakane Mines in Botswana after which he moved
to South Africa with DeBeers where he worked as Mining Manager for Oaks
Mine in Limpopo.
Mr. Rweyemamu was then promoted to the position of Operations Manager for Namaqualand Mines in Kleinzee, South Africa.
He
left DeBeers and joined ABG’s North Mara Mine in 2007 where he worked
as Mining Manager. From 2007 to 2010 he headed up the Artisinal Mining
and Small-Scale Mining Project for Barrick in Tanzania before being
appointed as Government Relations Manager for ABG, a position he held
until March 2012. Mr. Rweyemamu then left ABG to join Shanta Mining
Company on the Singida Project as General Manager.
Mr.
Rweyemamu holds a Masters of Science degree in Mining Engineering,
Geomechanics, from the University of Exeter, Camborne School of Mines in
England. He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering
from Camborne School of Mines and a Mining Technology Diploma from
Hailey School of Mines, Ontario in Canada.
About Tulawaka Mine
The Tulawaka mine located in Biharamulo district, Kagera region, is one of ABG's four gold-producing mines in Tanzania.
The mine comprises a completed open pit mine with an underground access ramp located at the bottom of the pit.
As
at 31 December 2011, a total of 1,043 people were employed at Tulawaka.
Some 493 were direct ABG employees and 550 were contracted personnel.
